  Dr. Inês Pires Silva and Scientist Dr. Sílvia Curado will host the lecture with Professor Manuela Veloso: “Symbiotic Autonomy: Robots, Humans, and the Web” and Professor Irene Fonseca: “The Portugal-USA Math Connection”,  at NYU (12 Waverly Place Auditorium), on October 19 at 4 pm.   
Inês Pires Silva (MD, New York University Cancer Institute)
Inês received her MD degree at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in Portugal. Afterwards, she started her trainee in Medical Oncology in Instituto Português de Oncologia, also in Lisbon. In October 2009, she was chosen for the Program for Advanced Medical Education in Lisbon (Portugal), an unique MD PhD program in her country. Linked to this program, sponsored by Gulbenkian and Champalimaud’s Foundations, she earned a three year fellowship grant, providing her the opportunity to undertake research at NYU Cancer Institute. She participated in clinical therapeutical trials in tumor vaccines and is currently preparing her PhD thesis in tumor immunology, both focusing the melanoma field. Parallel to research, she was invited for a further year, as a clinical fellow in NYU Cancer Institute. However, Inês’ interests go far beyond medical science. She volunteered as a medical doctor in Brazilian slums, worked with international medical assistance (AMI) in Cape Vert and helped a buddhist community in Nepal. Furthermore, she is passionate about literature and theater, being an author of the poem book – “Um olhar…”.
