A LITTLE COUNTRY ACROSS THE OCEAN BOOK RELEASE
A Little Country Across the Ocean was conceived by visual artist Constança Saraiva. It was made in partnership with Roulote – Projectos Artísticos, under an invitation by Arte Institute. The artistic and educational project was developed with more than two hundred students of Portuguese language schools in the states of New York and New Jersey, in the United States of America. The project seeks to investigate Portuguese memory and heritage in the US, to strengthen the Portuguese identity of the younger generations, to promote intergenerational contact in Portuguese-American families, to promote Portuguese identity and memory in the United States and to share the history of Portuguese emigration, Portugal and its culture to the general public.
The book is the result of this work done with the Portuguese Schools of Long Island and New Jersey in last year’s edition of the event “Portugal in SoHo”.
The project unfolded in three phases:
1) the “Notebook of the 14 Questions about Portugal” – an activity booklet about Portugal sent to students,
2) the participation in the Portugal in Soho festival in May 2016 – where the results of the notebook were presented, where we met the children personally and many other activities for Portuguese-American families were developed,
3) this book, which finalizes the project – an edition of the written and drawn material by the Portuguese-American children and that seeks to show their perspective on their Portuguese origins.
