Mario Lúcio was born in Tarrafal on the island of Santiago, Cabo Verde on October 21, 1964. He was a very precocious child and at ten years old, he was sent to live in the barracks of the old concentration camp in Tarrafal, under the guardianship of the State. By the time he was orphaned by the age of 15, he had already learned to play several instruments, compose, and write poems. Around this time he was featured in the revolution band of youth called Abel Djassi, introducing sophisticated rhythms of traditional music. He is also the founder and leader of the beloved group Simentera.
As a musician, (singer, writer and composer) he is referred to in Cabo Verde as one of the best musicians in the country due to the high quality of his compositions, arrangements and the philosophical content of his albums. He is an always researching the traditional music from Cabo Verde and adding a modern touch with his original poetry. He is one of the most recognized composers and has recorded with Cesaria Evora, Mayra Andrade, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento, Toumani Diabte and Harry Belafonte, and has traveled around the world to sharing the music and culture of Cabo Verde
Following his appointment as the Minister of Culture for the country of Cabo Verde from 2011-2016, Mario Lucio has returned to his first love of music with a new CD entitled “Funanight.” He is currently on tour in Europe and will kick of his tour in the United States at SOBs in New York City.
