Invoking the ghost of Ennio Morricone, the soul of Fado and the post-modern irony of Nick Cave, Tó Trips and Pedro Gonçalves are Dead Combo. On stage they incarnate two characters that could have come from a comics book: a undertaker and a gangster. Dead Combo emerged in 2003 when Tó and Pedro were asked by a radio station to record a tribute to the genius of the Portuguese guitar, Carlos Paredes. Five highly acclaimed albums have followed along with perennial “Record of the Year” awards and top seller status in Iberia.
Their distinct sound is influenced by folk, Americana, Blues, Rock, Mexican and Brazilian music and Portuguese Fado mixed into a cauldron of reverberating guitars, film references, Cuban jazz, flamenco, and spaghetti Western scores.
After appearing in Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations” segment of Lisbon, they climbed the iTunes USA World Music Chart up to the Top 10 with 3 of their albums.
In 2014 Dead Combo sold out over 40 concerts in Portugal including the Lisboa Coliseum and performed in England, France, Germany, Austria, Mexico, Brazil and Macau.
2015 brings France, Germany, US, Canada and Russia’s concerts. Their music has been consistently synched to documentaries, films and television including the upcoming film, Focus [featuring Will Smith].
This March they make their North American première.
