The Love Tragedies
“The Love Tragedies” of Joao Carlos at Castelo Sao Jorge, Lisbon, Portugal.
This year from June 1st to June 30th, “A Maior Exposição Fotografica Do Mundo” will take place in Lisbon, and will provide the perfect backdrop for presenting the outstanding work of Joao Carlos’ “Love Tragedies” exhibited in large format prints at the historical landmark Castelo Sao Jorge. Created for the Hasselblad Masters Awards 2009 and shot with the Hasselblad H4D camera, “The Love Tragadies” series has gained international acclaim, having been shown in galleries across the world and published by the teNeues Publishing Group in a 240 page illustrated book, “Hasselblad Masters Vol. 2 – Emotion”.
In these works, Joâo Carlos pairs the literature of love tragedies through the ages with the techniques of fashion photography. These images have a composition and balance inspired by the masters of painting and echo their work also in that these stories are the subjects that the great painters would have taken on. Centuries-old castles and palaces in Portugal create a fairy tale setting for the characters to play out their
doomed love.
“The location is crucial. The lighting, the emotion of the models, the interactions between the couples – it all has to work in harmony – but it is the set that creates the mood and creates another dimension of emotion.”
Joâo acknowledges Hasselblad as one of the finest brands in photography and also what made these images possible: The high definition and superior quality of Hasselblad’s H4D 40 camera.
This is the second year of this event, “A Maior Exposicao Fotografica Do Mundo”, which draws photographic work from national and international artists of high acclaim, from many different disciplines including photojornalism, fine art, portraiture and commercial photography. Hosting both group and solo exhibitions, the project seeks to promote the use of public space, architectural heritage and national monuments through the involvement of public and private organizations. The large-format photography will transform the city into an enormous gallery of photographic art.
