New York, NY, May 2012 – Strings of Thought is a contemporary dance piece that uses digital media as part of an interactive scenography. This project will premiere in July in Guimarães, Portugal, as part of the European Capital of Culture 2012, but before heading abroad, Franco and Teixeira will show a preview of Strings of Thought at 3LD Art + Technology Center in New York City on June 7 and 8 at 8:00pm.
In this solo dance piece, the dancer’s body is attached to several suspended cables, each with the ability to control sound, light and text. They represent the abstractions of our personal dogmas, affecting the body’s movement and dexterity and revealing the inner struggle between who we are and who we wish to be.
Since 2006, Ivan Franco and Lígia Teixeira have developed several performances that explore physical interaction with digital systems, creating a true dialogue between body and machine.
About the Artists:
Lígia Teixeira is a Portuguese dancer and choreographer working in the intersection between dance and technology. She has performed and presented work throughout Portugal, Spain, The Netherlands, Cape Vert and New York. Her work, Lively Dreams, was awarded the Multimedia National Award 2009. Currently she is a scholar from Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Luso-American Foundation (FLAD), attending the MFA program in Performance and Interactive Media Arts at Brooklyn College. She is a founding member and artistic director of Milliways.
Ivan Franco has been recognized as a thought leader in the areas of interactive technologies, digital art and innovation management. He has won three scholarships, lectured in several universities and is a regular invited speaker (Tedx, EComm, OFFF, SXSW, NIME). In parallel Ivan has also maintained a close relationship with the digital art community, and presented several of his works of electronic music, interactive installation and contemporary performance (STEIM, Future Places, Pixelache).
Strings of Thought will premiere on July 11-13rd in the European Capital of Culture 2012.
Strings of Thought is a co-production of Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture in partnership with Minho University and 3 Legged Dog. This project is financed by the Portuguese State Secretary of Culture / DGArtes.
