City Winery & Ethnomuze present Sara Tavares & Carminho!
Tuesday, November 17 at 8pm
Two distinct female voices in a magical evening of new-generation Lusophone music.
Star of 2007 globalFEST, the beloved Cape Verdean singer-songwriter Sara Tavares makes her triumphant return to the US after a six-year pause, while she battled and recovered from a serious condition. Tavares “trades in understatement. She strokes rather than strums guitar chords … and her soft close-to-the-mike voice specialises in gentle yearning.” (The Independent) Born in Lisbon to Cape Verdean parents, Tavares celebrates her heritage while incorporating global influences. She fills the first half of the show with funky rhythms, warm vocals and gorgeous, textured songwriting.
The evening then shifts to fado with Carminho, one of the most talented and innovative fado singers of her generation. Born Carmo Rebelo de Andrade to a mother who is also a revered fado singer, her distinctive sound draws inspiration from fado legends Lucília do Carmo, Fernando Maurício, and Amália Rodrigues. She is one of the most outstanding and heartfelt voices to come out of the recent fado resurgence, performing traditional and contemporary songs, as well as jazz, Brazilian pop, and Portuguese folk music.
