‘O Som e a Fúria’ is the second production of a trilogy teatromosca is dedicating to North American Literature (in 2003 it presented ‘Moby Dick’ by Herman Melville and in 2015 it will present ‘Fahrenheit 451’ by Ray Bradbury).
Departing from the novel with the same name by William Faulkner (Nobel Prize in Literature in 1949), the text is adapted by Alexandre Sarrazola. ‘The Sound and the Fury’ challenges, through Benjy (Ruben Chama), Quentin (Filipe Araújo) and Jason (João Cabral), the ruin of the Compson family, former aristocrats from the South of the United States. Each one of them centres their own narrative (true or imaginary) with Caddy, the only daughter of the family. And that is the journey of each one of the brothers, isolated, tied in the past, which gives us the account on the disintegration of the family and its reputation.
The challenge to stage this novel handles the work of a text, where the plot does not evolve in a traditional way, where it seems there will be no future and the present is always a past event. It is exactly this notion of Time, one Pedro Alves explores in this translation to the stage of William Faulkner’s novel.
The performance is a coproduction with Quorum Ballet, Theatro Circo de Braga, Arte Institute de Nova Iorque, USA Embassy in Lisbon, Festival Internacional de Teatro do Alentejo, Festival de Teatro de Setúbal, with the support of the Portuguese Ministry of Culture – Portuguese Government and it also counts on the performance of the musician, Ruben Jacinto, and dancers Catarina Correia, Inês Pedruco and Margarida Costa.

William Faulkner was born in 1897 in the USA. He is considered one of the most important American writers. In 1949 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, and afterwards he won the National Book Award in 1951, with ‘Collected Stories’ and in 1955 with the novel ‘A Fable’ he received the Pulitzer Prize. He would will the Pulitzer again in 1962 with his last novel, ‘The Reivers’. Faulkner used the writing technique named ‘stream of consciousness’ very well know by James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Marcel Proust and Thomas Mann. Faulkner narrated the decay of the Southern states in the USA, making it interior to his own characters, most of them living under desperate situations, in the imaginary county of Yoknapatawpha. Faulkner’s work is taken into consideration by many as airtight and challenging. Faulker wrote ‘Sartoris’ (1929), ‘The Sound and the Fury’ (1929), ‘As I lay Diyng’ (1930), ‘Sanctuary’ (1931), ‘Light in August’ (1932), ‘Absalom, Absalom!’ (1936),‘Requiem For A Nun’ (1951), among other novels and short stories.
teatromosca is a theatre company, funded in Sintra in 1999. In that year it produced «Ser Bom», departing from «Notes From Underground» by Eric Bogosian, directed by Paulo Campos dos Reis. In 2001 it produced «Prodigiosas Acrobacias», by Álvaro Figueiredo, with dramaturgy of the author and directed by Paulo Campos dos Reis and «O Televisor», by Jaime Rocha, directed by Paulo Campos dos Reis (having teatromosca promoted the publishing of the book with the same name); in 2002 «DOG ART» departing from a novel by John Berger, translated and adapted by Pedro Alves, «Húmus», idea and interpretation of Paulo Campos dos Reis and João Miguel Rodrigues, from a poem with the same name by Herberto Helder and «A Última Gravação de Krapp», by Samuel Beckett, directed by Paulo Campos dos Reis; in 2003 «GABBA GABBA HEI», original script by Alex Gozblau and artistic direction of João Miguel Rodrigues, «Tristão e o Aspecto da Flor», by Francisco Luís Parreira, codirected by Francisco Luís Parreira and João Miguel Rodrigues and «KIP», written and directed by Pedro Alves; in 2004 «Querosene (“arde sem se ver”)», with text from various Portuguese authors directed by João Miguel Rodrigues, «Maletas Vicentinas», departing from Gil Vicente, a project by and with Sérgio Moura Afonso, Pedro Alves and Rute Lizardo and «Um Rapto em Cintra», by Eça Leal, directed by Pedro Alves and João Miguel Rodrigues; in 2005 «mostra» on the motifs by Gao Xingjian, directed by Maria Gil, «Literaturódromo», a project of rehearsed readings, «Depois de Julieta», by Sharman Macdonald, directed by Ruben Tiago. In 2006 the company starts «Literaturinha», a series of rehearsed readings of classical literature for kids and early teens. It also produced «Na Margem da Vida», by Gao Xingjian, directed by Maria Gil; in 2008 «Notas de Cozinha de Leonardo da Vinci», choreography by Diana Alves and «IGNARA», project dedicated to the theme of the Portuguese Colonial War, that entailed three readings; in 2009 «INFA 72», by Fernando Sousa, directed by Mário Trigo, «Dor Fantasma», with texts by Manuel Bastos and directed by Mário Trigo and «Retratinhos», a theatre project for kids and early teens; in 2010 «As Três Vidas de Lucie Cabrol», first performance of the trilogy «of his works», based on the text of British writer John Berger, directed by Pedro Alves, Special Jury’s Award at the Festival Les Eurotopiques and one of the best ten performances presented in Portugal in 2010 according to the weekly paper Expresso; in 2011 «EUROPA», the second performance of the trilogy, also directed by Pedro and «Checoslováquia», by Tiago Patrício, rehearsed reading presented at the Salão Nobre do Teatro Nacional D. Maria II (teatromosca promoted the publishing of the text via its publishing house moscaMORTA); «Tróia», the last performance of the John Berger trilogy, again directed by Pedro Alves. These last two performances of the trilogy were chosen as two of the best performances presented in Portugal in 2011 by the theatre critic of Expresso. In 2013 «A Paixão do Jovem Werther», departing from the novel with the same name by J.W. Goethe, with artistic direction of Mário Trigo, adaptation of Tiago Patrício and «Moby-Dick», based on Herman Melville’s novel, opening up a new trilogy dedicated to North American Literature, one that will last until 2015 directed by Pedro Alves. Moby Dick also made it to the top ten list of best performances presented in Portugal in 2013.
