Arte Institute supports “Identity” – Miami/Lisbon Dance Exchange Featuring Amalgama, Plural Dance & Karen Peterson and Dancers” a International Mixed Ability Dance Companies, May 12 and 13 at MDCA On Stage Black Box – Miami.
A Sinewy Line snakes its way from Lisbon to Miami, from Portugal to the United States, in two special evenings of mixed ability dance May 12 and 13 the Miami-Dade County Auditorium “On Stage Black Box Theater” at 8:00 pm. Portuguese companies Amalgama Companhia de Danca and Plural Nucleo de Dance will join Miami’s own Karen Peterson and Dancers (KPD) for this groundbreaking exploration of bodies of all abilities in motion. All three groups have previously collaborated, including presenting a jointly created piece at a concert in Lisbon together this April. Plural is one of Portugal’s leading mixed-ability dance companies, with an ongoing creative partnership with Amalgama, one of Portugal’s leading contemporary dance companies, for more than a decade. Karen Peterson and Dancers is Florida’s leading company dedicated to integrating dancers and students with a range of physical abilities.

Four works will be part of the evenings of this “Miami/Lisbon Dance Exchange. The first is the premiere of a duet between innovative Miami dancer Pioneer Winter, and KPD company member and wheelchair dancer Marjorie Burnett, choreographed by Winter. The second is the premiere of “Through A Void, Inside A Brick,” a new collaboration by choreographers and KPD company members Katrina Weaver and Juan Maria Seller, with video by Ignacio Gutierrez, based on the true story of Ana de Orosco who disappeared one day, suddenly, after her wedding in the mid 16th century. The third is the Miami premiere of In “This Place, At the Same Time,” from Plural Nucleo de Dance, a duet from the Lisbon-based company. And last, “Identity,” a collaboration between all three companies, with choreography by Sandra Battaglia, Rafael Alvarez and Karen Peterson, which explores their physical, linguistic, geographical and political commonalities and differences. Long time arts advocate Senator Gwen Margolis will be honored, and the Honorary Consul of Portugal for South Florida, Mr. Riu Forcada, will introduce the performance on Friday night.
