Application

A complete application is to be submitted by the published deadline to Arte Institute at residency@arteinstitute.org either in Portuguese or English. The following information is a prerequisite for being considered an applicant to Portugal: Artistic Residency:

 

 
> Application Form: Fill out the application form.


> Letter of Intent: In one page or less, a brief description of applicant’s work or project to be completed while in residence, career direction, and why the applicant should be awarded a residency at Portugal: Artistic Residency.
 
 
> Resume: A resume of three pages or less.
 
 
> Artist Statement: In one page or less, description of the applicant’s creative work, process, technique, and conceptual development.
 
 
> Project Proposal: The project proposal questions should identify key issues addressed in the artist’s project

      _ What is the purpose and goal of the project? (250 words)
      _ What is the specific phase of the project while at the Residency (in-progress or new)?
         Please be as specific as possible.(150 words)

      _ What outputs/products will result from the residency?
      _ How do you plan to disseminate your results and to whom? (150 words)
 
 
>Two Letters of Recommendation: Applicants are asked to provide contact information for 2 references.
 
 
> Work Samples: Applicants in specific art fields will have different requirements for work samples. The following will outline the work samples for each artistic discipline. Please note that work samples will not be returned.
 
  • Visual Artists: Ten images of your work created within the last five years. All the images must be in either .jpg or .gif format with 300 dpi resolution. The maximum height and width is 1240 pixels. Please include a list with the image number, title, size, medium, and date of work.

  • Video/Filmmakers: Up to two video samples, all submissions must have been created within the last five years. If running time exceeds 20 minutes, you should include a 5-minute excerpt. 

  • Composers: One music score and an audio file copy completed in the last five years.

  • Literary Artists, Fiction & Non-Fiction: One writing sample published within the last five years where you are the primary author (20 page maximum).

  • Multi-Media Artists: Ten images of your work AND/OR video samples created within the last five years. If running time exceeds 20 minutes, you should include a 5-minute excerpt.

  • Playwrights: A selection from a play written within the last five years (20 page maximum). If you have a video clip of your play, you can submit it as supporting work sample.

  • Poets: A writing sample published within the last five years where you are the primary author (20 page maximum).

  • Dance: Up to two video samples, all submissions must have been created within the last five years. If running time exceeds 20 minutes, you should include a 5-minute excerpt.
